An Operating System is the low-level software that controls a computer. It controls how your hardware functions, the communication with peripheral devices like a monitor, a printer or a keyboard, the allocation of memory between applications, and the prioritization of apps if multiple ones run at the same time. Each and every program that's installed on a notebook or a desktop functions by sending requests to the OS for different services using an application program interface (API). The contact with the OS can be achieved via a Graphical User Interface (GUI) or a command line. In the Internet hosting field, the Operating System is what controls a server together with all the software installed on it, which includes not only website scripts, but, in addition any other application such as a VOIP or a game server. When there are virtual machines created, they employ a guest OS that is run on the server host OS.
Multiple OS in VPS Servers
Our VPS server packages include three Linux releases that you can choose from for the Operating System of your new server - Debian, Ubuntu and CentOS. Apart from being absolutely free, the OSs are extremely stable and safe and the key reason to offer all 3 of them is to ensure that you will be able to run any app that you would like, because different pieces of software could have different requirements about the environment they can be used on. Each one of the three OSs is backed by a vast community of developers who have generated thousands of software packages which you can install and use on your VPS. Based on the Operating System that you choose, you will also be able to select between 3 different Control Panels to take care of your website hosting content. Of course, if you decide that you need some other OS, we can always reinstall the server with it. As a paid upgrade, we also provide weekly updates of the OS for maximum stability and security.
Multiple OS in Dedicated Servers
We offer three Operating Systems with our dedicated server packages - CentOS, Ubuntu and Debian. They're all different Linux distributions and we offer them not only because they're free so they won't increase the cost of your new web hosting server, but also because they are really secure and stable. Each of them is supported by a huge community of web developers, so you'll be able to choose from thousands of software packages that you may install on your server if the application that you would like to employ has certain requirements. The Operating System will also determine what web hosting Control Panel you can use as the Control Panels that we offer run on specific OSs only and because we would like to provide you with as much freedom as possible, we offer a couple of OSs and multiple Control Panels. If you choose a server with a given OS, we will change it upon request in case it turns out that you'll need another one. We could also keep the OS updated on a weekly basis as a part of our optional Managed Services upgrade.
